nuWho in brief

* One of the things that grates on me most of all about nuWho is the trick of making the Doctor look stupid for a cheap laugh. Clearly, this is something that the new showrunner loves as well.

* River Song is an idiot.

* The Weeping Angels...does anything about them make one atom of sense? I mean, anything?

*Another episode of this rubbish before the next bit of rubbish (which at least we don't know too much about, so it may be something new for a change). I may skip it.

Okay, maybe not that many spoilers...

EDIT: see also this post by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge for the main thing (apart from her idiocy and jerkitude) that bugged me about River Song in this episode. See thing 3. Kind of related to my first bullet point, but better expressed.

Zandr, just stop watching it, OK?!

[identity profile] zanda-myrande.livejournal.com 2010-04-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried that. I went cold TARDIS. I managed not to watch any of the "specials" last year. And then the Countess said "has there been any Doctor Who this year?"

I just can't kill that last spark of hope in me.

The Weeping Angels are clearly the NuWho tribute to the Bugbladder Beasts of Traal. Given that, why should they make sense?

River Song is not an idiot. But she is a jerk.

Amy Pond, on the other hand, is awesome. I know which of the two I'd marry, and it's not She Who Flows.

Well, if she's not an idiot, then her plan here is too deep and subtle for me, because it looks to me like "walk into trouble and snap fingers for tame Time Lord to get me out." Which is the plan of an idiot.

It's a Deux Ex Machina plan!

I suspect we're using different words to say the same thing. Forcing someone to do what she needs like that is the mark of a jerk. Knowing that he can and will do what is necessary is intelligent (i.e, not idiotic). She's being too clever for her own good, diving into something way beyond her depth and expecting to get pulled out.

Either way, I'm still liking Amy Pond more each time out.

Okay, here's why she's an idiot.

A many years ago, I arranged to meet my then fiancee, now my wife, the ever-fragrant Countess, in a certain pub in South London to which neither of us had previously been. Unfortunately, I was delayed by circumstances beyond my control, with the result that the Countess had to wait for an hour in a dim and smoky pub surrounded by intimidating strangers, and was justly upset with me for having allowed circumstances beyond my control to delay me. Now, in this analogy, I am the Doctor, the Countess is River Song, the circumstances beyond my control are a TARDIS that has been proved to be unreliable time and again, and the dim and smoky pub represents death by explosive decompression in the airless vacuum of space. And it goes on from there. She has no idea what she is dealing with or what she is going to do about any of it, and refuses to defer to anyone who might have a clue till it's far too late. I call idiot. But I'm willing to take jerk into consideration as well.

I see what you mean. Not certain I agree -- I get the impression Doctor Song is smart, and just smart enough to get in over her head, time after time. It's certainly possible that she's not that smart. But somehow, I doubt even the NuWho Doctor would get as deeply involved as we know he eventuially does, with a woman who's not intelligent.

He'll do what the writers make him do. That's the tragedy of it all.

We don't often agree on Nuwho. The River Song/Dr Time line thing is confusing me. Now admitedly my brain is leaking out my ears right now, perhaps that isn't helping. But Didn't she DIE? Is she?... Ok she's time traveling as well, but, yes If we get to see a lot of her I'm not going to enjoy it unless she gets nicer.

The Weeping Angels. Yeh, of so they are "dying" surly the ones who are walking around zap people. (I still find the very scary, should have waited to watch this episode)

I still like Matt Smith, I didn't like this episode much, I have to watch next week, yeah I fall for hooks. I'm an idiot. I love Amy. I might even Like her more than Donna. I just wish my brain would stay in my head.

I guess over all, I'm just happy to have A Tardis hopping around. I don't always agree with what you write, and when I want to think I just browse. but you always make me think ,when I have the energy. thanks!

A pleasure. I don't expect everyone (or anyone) to agree with me, and it's nice that people are so patient with my outcries of whatever.

I'm wondering what Moffat is going to do now he's used up his previous characters. I'm not placing bets that he'll actually come up with new ones.

(I'm also feeling that people who produce/direct/run a show should be banned from writing for it as well at the same time. Unless their initials happen to be JMS. It rarely works out well, at least in part because all writers tend to need someone to override them when they do something stupid (writers who get popular enough to ignore editors have the same problem).)

((However, Amy is cute. Srsly cute. I'm not even going to try to choose between her and Martha (Rose is a long way behind and That Other One isn't anywhere near the running...))
