Memories of (perhaps) happier times. I discovered The Enid during my first few days at university, hearing this amazing music coming from a room two doors doown the corridor. Meeting good friends who also loved their music and discovering them to be gamers. The Enid was the last record played at the last disco after finals (the Dambuster's Match, I kid you not).
I only got to see them live once - Southampton Guildhall c 1982. A hall full of rockers, bikers etc stood in awe as they played Elgar...
And it looks like they could soon be back with a new album and a tour (at least of Japan) in the offering. see http://www.theenid.com/ There's also some downloads of recent work available
Ooh. I remember them but never had any of their albums (as I recall I had a couple of cassettes recorded from a friend's LPs, but they have long since gone). It looks as though all of their albums except the first are still available on CD, I'll have to investigate.
I had the same experience. In my mid-late teens, I had an enormous Wagner kick, and in my first few days at University, I was sitting in my room listening to Parsifal. I went out to the kitchen, and was very surprised to hear exactly the same music coming from a friend (nickbarnes)'s room across the landing, only on synthesisers.
For many years their concert at Hammersmith Apollo (1987? I'm not quite sure, but I may even still have the poster somewhere!) was the only rock concert I'd ever been to, and I still have a couple of their albums on my iPod.
I just listened to the MP3 of "Mars (orchestral prelude)" and it is awesome! I want!
(As an aside, I attempted to order from their shopping site, it allowed me to put stuff in the cart fine but when I went to buy it seemed to have lost half of it and said NaN a lot (that's floating point "Not a Number")...)
