The Zander Nyrond Fanfic Poll

A many years ago, when I was young and dribbling, as some of you may know, I practiced fanfic scribbling...

I finished two and three-quarters Blake's Seven stories. Two and a half of them were published, two in the second and fourth issues of a zine called Frak, and the half as a self-contained thing called Links. Today I resurrected both halves of Links from the depths of the LocoScript files in which it was hidden, and while I have developed somewhat as a writer since then (gods, I should *hope* so) it doesn't actually read that badly. There is no slash, and the story does not revolve around who gets off with whom (though there is some of that going on in the background): what I was trying to do was end the series the way I wanted it to end, and I think I succeeded without being too contrived about it.

It seems unlikely that the second half would be publishable now (is anyone still writing B7 stuff?) but it kind of irks me that I never got it all out there.

So...

[Poll #951781]

What do you think?

[identity profile] bardling.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know anything about Blake's 7, I'd probably try "Finish tweaking part two, get the publisher's permission, scan in the two preceding stories and put the whole jolly lot up?", but if there are problems with getting the permission, I'd reconsider, or if you feel like writing something else, I'd do that (doesn't have to be instead, could be as well?)...

Yes, not very helpful, I know... *wry grin*

Now this is what he's wibbling, would people read his scribbling? They were what he was dribbling, a-many years ago...

'Big D' you Marion - was trying to think of witty rhyme as I clicked link to reply but you had already found one. There goes me Navy pension...

Well, I was thinking of

There is no room for quibbling, when he was young and dribbling, he practiced fanfic scribbling, a many years ago...

But that may be too close to the original.

Does copyright to Links reside with the publisher or with you as the author? It would be polite to inform the publisher even if the second is the case, but current outlooks on 'intellectual property' would probably side with you even if you didn't.

As for readership, there is at least one B7 story a month being added to the archive of fanfiction.net (although there still aren't as many stories as there are for Tellytubbies) and plenty of other sites out there that are hosting B7 fics.

Don't let lack of shipping put you off. Just because over 90% of fics seem to be relationship orientated doesn't make them more readable than the less than 50% of them that are plot orientated. Besides slash writers/readers are showing a frustrated longing for something that they can never experience in real life while attempting the end B7 in a satisfactory way... heck, you're practically writing slash already!

[identity profile] zanda-myrande.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
With me, I think. I was just thinking it would be polite to give the publisher the chance to say if she wants to bring out Book Two or would prefer me not to make the others publicly available. I can't honestly see that they're of more than historical or novelty interest these days anyway.

I just dug out and reread the first two, and discovered that (a) they both could do with tweaking (well, DUH), and (b) the print quality may well render them unscannable. So I may have some typing to do...

Since, as I recall, ...

[identity profile] soren-nyrond.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
this was what brought Nyronds to a deal of the public (in part 1) and included the "Duck ! Swallow !" repartee in part 2 (as well as resurrecting Zen), I would vote (and have voted) for "Bring it back ! Bring it all back !!" (as did the audience when Lady Constance did the striptease).

BTW, was part 3 (Links itself) the one where you were doing Extensive Research on the Life and Habits of the Tribal Squirrel ?

So you want me to cover it all up again, is that what you're saying? :)

I read in Janet's intro to "Powers" that one of the theories about the Liberator that I explored was in fact yours. Let me know which so that I can assign appropriate credit.

Was it my idea that, since Zen could auto-repair, it might be able to rebuild itself from the debris ? And you "personalised" it, by (if I remember aright) having Zen "go postal" on the corroding agent, and use *its* remains to start the process off (?)

Sounds plausible. When I get the story up, lo there shall be a co-credit.

There's still a fair amount of B7 fanfic out there - [livejournal.com profile] watervole is always on the lookout for B7 fic (there's a link to the fanfic site from her lj)

And some of us oldtimers much prefer fanfic with Plots and Characterisation and Real SF Stuff than all this Shipping (do they have proper 'Bills of Lading' I wonder?) and Hetting, and angsty/slashing.

I sympathise with the scanning problems - I face the task of turning a lot of mimeographed stuff into net-publishable form - not to mention WordPro.txt files on 5"floppy discs…

*Sorry - dunno what come over me there...

I can't promise real sf stuff, at least not by [livejournal.com profile] lil_shepherd's standards--I expect she would turn her nose up and sniff "miracles" at quite a lot of it.

Anyway, I've emailed Janet E (the publisher) to see what she thinks.

You'll never know unless you publish it. [grin]

Can you read the 5 1/4" disks? I have the hardware to read them and might be able to reinstall the software if I can find it.

We have a CPU with both 5.25" and 3.5" disk slots and the appropriate software (unfortunately one of the cats peed on the monitor and keyboard...) and another with a 3.5" and a CD... But I may have to call on your support if all else fails! Thanks for the offer!

[identity profile] armb.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to read them, but don't have preferences on what you should do (since even if you go for "Forget the whole thing and go and write something else", the something else is also likely to be worth reading).

[identity profile] soren-nyrond.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
You make, sir, a trenchant point: with rare exceptions, Zander's output is worth treasuring.

[identity profile] alyramoondancer.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I voted. :D

If it has Nyronds, then yes! Definitely bring it all back!

[identity profile] zanda-myrande.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Only peripherally (subject to what happens with the first story when I start retyping it: the conception has altered a little in the intervening time, so who knows). The second and third stories both have Ethan Powers in them, though, so that's something. :)

[identity profile] alyramoondancer.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, definitely! My vote stands: Bring 'em back! :)
