We voted

On the way home at about half past five. I don't officially know about axylides, but I voted for the only major party that has not yet betrayed me.

I am very sorry if my comments in various people's LJs on the futility of this exercise have upset people. I'm truly amazed at the depth of feeling I've seen, on all sides. Only I've been voting for twenty-six years, and my experience has been that if the party you didn't vote for gets in, you get dumped on, and if the party you did vote for gets in, they betray you and you still get dumped on. If the LibDems by some miracle got a working majority tomorrow, I find it impossible to believe in my heart of hearts that they would do anything other than betray and dump on us. I had a lot invested in that 1997 election. It's gone, and I'll never get it back. So I read how rich men who own (or are owned by) large corporate demons tell each Government what to do and each Government tugs its forelock and says yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir, and I see that we have no democracy and we have no power to change anything and these rich men rule the country for their own profit. And I still go and vote as if anything could change. And it HURTS.

Tomorrow, when I read that Blair is back in with a slightly reduced majority, or Michael Howard has won with a tiny lead and is wooing the LibDems (who are very unlikely to say no) to boost his power, I will simply be relieved that I can stop thinking about this and go back to doing my silly little irrelevant fun things and pretending that the walls are not rising ever higher around us. And I am truly sorry if that seems...well, whatever it might seem.

Now I am going to feel good about tomorrow and Keris coming to visit, bearing techie goodness. With any luck, I might be broadbanded by Sunday, and *finally* not costing us the GDP of Burkina Faso every time I go online. Squee.

That's why I've been saying "I'm not so concerned about who wins, as by how much they win by". It's a bit harder for them to dump on us if they only win by the skin of their teeth - whoever they are.

Really? Because I think once they've won, and they've made the usual meaningless noises, that's all they care about.

"Whoever you vote for, the government always gets in!" For the record, you didn't upset me and I apologise if anything I wrote gave you the impression that I was upset (well, OK, I'm upset by the lack of democracy but that is /not/ your fault!).

(With luck, it will be working by midday Saturday. With even more luck it might be working tonight...)
