A question

Has anyone else who uses Windows 10 experienced an "update" this morning which installed itself in spite of preferences being set to "ask me first" and after which several things on the computer do not work at all, or work differently, or work up to a point and then crash?

I have encountered one other person on the net who reports something similar, but there must e more than two of us.

Comments to the effect that Windows is rubbish and only rubbish people use it will meet with a stony silence. That is not what I need. Thank you.

I'm a Windows 8 holdout, so all I can offer is sympathy and thanks for the head's up.

Incidentally, I'm not holding out because I think Win10 is crap or anything. I'm just so annoyed that they released such a shitty OS as Win8 that I'm refusing to do anything they tell me to do, which includes upgrading to Win10 which is, by all accounts, better than 8.

My last 64-bit Windows 10 update was installed on March 22, but the update schedule for 32-bit Windows 10 is different.

When I go to Settings -> Update & security -> Advanced options -> View your update history, it says I can uninstall updates, but I have never attempted this.

I believe that Windows 10 will download and install updates automatically unless you tell it you have a "metered connection". This only works if you connect wirelessly. If you connect through an ethernet cable, Windows 10 doesn't give you this option.

March 20 my mom's brand new Inspiron was killed by the update. The hard drive locked up and recovery measures did not work at all. We went back and forth with Dell for over a week first trying to use their recovery software (no effect), a witch's brew of it and a Win 7 recovery from a friend (which got us as far as Troubleshoot) but ineffective for any troubleshoot measures, and finally sending in the drive for a new one. All this time the Dell diagnostic reported a problem with the CPU fan even though it seemed to be turned on. When the new drive was installed that was the time her machine decided that the small issue with the fan was now an Emergency and would boot but loop the diagnostic review. Thank Whoever I had backed up her documents on her One Drive and was able to transfer everything to my tablet as a Plan B. We ended up finally trading it out at the store for a new HP which works wonderfully. But oh, what a headache.

ETA: My tablet took in the update and all of her stuff with no problem at all. It's now on Dell to autopsy it and find out its CBSOD, but I'm afraid we're out of the loop there.
