I recovered my senses, to find myself lying on a brightly-lit lushly-grassed lawn. I tried to move, but the slightest move woke aches that were explicit that I ought not to try anything further.
After a few minutes, however, I felt a little better, and turned my head cautiously.
I was in front of a substantial edifice – a building with a pillared entrance porch, and wings stretching to either side. Beside me, about ten feet away, was a gravelled path, and behind me the path stretched towards a treeline, which curled round at either side of the building, leaving it like an island on a sea of trees.
I sat up and checked myself over – the aches were passing, I didn’t seem to have sustained any permanent injury, but I was clearly no longer in the Spring Plantation. And, when I looked for it, my mobile phone was no longer in my pocket.
And, it dawned on me, there was no sign of Fudge. A fact which, since my GPS and my other gear was in her saddlebags, left me just a little bereft.
