Jan's half brother Mervyn died at some point in the last week, we found out last night. The funeral is tomorrow, but I think we've decided just to send a wreath and phone his widow. There hasn't been much contact with that half of the family in the last several years, either way, and it's kind of short notice to drive up.

Give Jan a hug from me. It's a shame the family didn't notify you earlier. My parents did that to me on a couple of occasions, and once after the event, with a comment the like of 'but (we have decided, with no reference to you or your feelings) you wouldn't want to go'. Even if you aren't close, it would be nice to be given the choice.
