The liberal ideal tries to encompass all kinds of people, with all kinds of needs, and says that if you have more than you need then you are in a position to help those who have less.

Well -- in practice, that turns into something more like "if you have more than you need, then you are obligated to help those who have less.

I can see why some would have a problem with this. I don't, at least not on general principles.
